Summer Salads: Your Secret to Winter Health
Summer is a great time. That sentence was longer, but actually it does just fine right there.
There’s a sense of freedom and joy that comes with the clear blue skies and the bright greens all around, don’t you think? It’s also a fab time to feel good about nourishing yourself with intention - it’s super easy to get a huge variety of fresh, seasonal, local produce at the supermarket, the corner store, farmers’ markets or neighbourhood swaps amongst people who grow their own.
While none of us like to dwell too much on the shortening days that will inevitably follow these gloriously long ones, summer is a great time to get a bit of prep in to reduce the impact of winter ailments.
Key to giving yourself robust winter health is creating a diverse and healthy population of bacteria that live in your gut.
The quickest, easiest and tastiest way to do it?
By “eating the rainbow” of fresh, brightly coloured veggies.
Try getting these three salads from one of my favourite recipe creators into your summer rotation. Collectively they provide all the colour, fibre and resistant starch that your good gut bugs thrive on and they’ll reward you by building your immune defenses to keep the winter nasties at bay.
